Kilindi Iyi started his Martial Arts career learning boxing from his father. Being an avid wrestler as a boy, Martial arts became an easy task.
During the mid 60s he had the pleasure of seeing a Martial Arts demonstration at the Michigan Sate Fair. Fascinated by the efficiency of the techniques, he decided at that point and time that the fighting arts would be his lifelong vocation. Studying with the top masters of the day in the Detroit area, his vision of Martial Arts changed in the late sixties and early seventies from Oriental to African Martial Concepts. Studying with anyone from the African continent that knew anything about African fighting arts in the United States Kilindi traveled to Africa in the late seventies to intensify his studies of the African Fighting Sciences. It was during this time that the Ta-merrian Martial Arts Institute was developed and it has grown to be one of the most sought after Martial Arts Schools in the world. Kilindi continues to this day to be a student teacher and advocate of the ancient African Martial tradition.

THE RITES OF PASSAGE PROGRAM
For Young Men and Young Women
(Ages 13 - 20)
This program is open to all. Although this is a Yoruba Traditional based program, you do not have to be a member of this tradition in order to participate in this program.
Rites of Passage is an experience practiced in African Traditional cultures. Adolescence can be a very turbulent time. The lure to participate in negative activity, too readily available, is strong. This program offers a positive alternative that is based on the African example as well as the traditions of African-American, Afro-Cuban, and other cultures of the Diaspora.
These rites bring joy and excitement not only to the youth and their families, but also to everyone in the community. As a child becomes an adult the community is assured that its traditions and values will continue on and never fade away. Like any change, the idea of changing roles can be frightening. Because of the dedication and understanding of the adults who work with them and teach them, along with the intense focus, instruction, and guidance given, they can safely grow and learn.
The Orisa (spiritual entities) based traditional Rites of Passage Program was established in June of 2003 in Brooklyn, NY. It is the first of its kind in the USA. It is governed by the Orisa Ogun who represents hard work, strength, bonds of brother and sisterhoods, and protection. In addition to Ogun, every class is dedicated to a specific Orisa.
